Cavaliers and Celtics to discuss status of Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade

Isaiah Thomas injury

The Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers are planning a phone call for Saturday after point guard Isaiah Thomas’ hip was worse than expected in his physical exam, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Thomas had been traded to Cleveland as part of the blockbuster deal which sent point guard Kyrie Irving to Boston. However, his physical throws the deal into jeopardy.

Given that Irving requested a trade from Cleveland and the Cavs knew Thomas’ hip was an issue, it’s hard to see the trade being called off. However, the Cavs could request an extra draft pick from Boston in the deal, according to Wojnarowski. The Celtics already paid a hefty price for Irving, giving up Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn’s 2018 first-round pick.

These two teams played each other in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, making trade talks between the two sides even more contentious. Despite that, the Celtics still gave up much more than most people thought was necessary for Irving. If Cleveland were to void the deal, it probably wouldn’t be the worst thing for Boston.

However, the Celtics have been waiting for a superstar and Irving is that player. Moreover, Thomas has just a year left on his contract and wants a max deal, which Boston may be unwilling to give him.

In any case, the end outcome of this will have a far-reaching impact on the league for years to come. With LeBron James potentially leaving Cleveland, this could help convince him to stay or go. This could cement the Celtics as title contenders or keep them a rung below Cleveland on the ladder. This could even be what gives the Cavs an edge over Golden State in the Finals.
