Doctors unsure whether Isaiah Thomas needs hip surgery

Isaiah Thomas injury

The Boston Celtics remain alive in their futile attempt to unseat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. This attempt was made more difficult when star guard Isaiah Thomas left Game 2 with a hip injury.

Now out for the remainder of the playoffs, there’s some concern that Thomas will have to undergo surgery to fix that injured hip.

At this point, doctors are unsure whether Thomas will have to undergo said surgery.

“Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas met with a hip specialist on Tuesday, the first in what’s expected to be a series of visits designed to determine the best rehabilitation plan after he was forced to shut down for the season during the Eastern Conference finals,” ESPN reported on Wednesday.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens indicated that doctors will likely have to wait until swelling subsides in the hip in order to draw a better conclusion here.

Hip injuries in particular are tricky. They could create long-term issues for a player, so it’s important to play this close to the vest. And considering Thomas has already been ruled out for the playoffs, there shouldn’t be a rush judgement made here.

Thomas is coming off a tremendous 2016-17 campaign that saw him average 28.9 points while shooting at a splendid 46 percent from the field. Though, his regular season performance was marred somewhat by a disastrous first two games in the Eastern Conference Finals that saw him shoot 7-of-25 from the field.

The veteran guard is entering the final year of his contract. How this injury plays out will likely determine whether Boston looks to hand the MVP candidate a max long-term deal.
