Carolina Panthers fear too many voices in Bryce Young’s ear causing rookie season struggles

The Carolina Panthers remain very high on the upside of No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young and they believe they may have figured out the cause of his frustrating early season struggles.

This April’s NFL Draft was deep with interesting quarterback prospects. Heading into the event, there was speculation that Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis could all be taken in the first round, and there was consistent debate on which player would be selected first among them.

However, when the Carolina Panthers were on the board with the first overall pick, Bryce Young was their man and they were reportedly confident in that decision well before the event. However, in the young season, the one-time Heisman Trophy winner has struggled among the rookie signal callers that have started over the first few weeks.

While Stroud has been phenomenal running the Texans’ offense, and Richardson has shown strong signs for the Colts, Young has had trouble throwing for even 200 yards despite having a pair of former Pro Bowlers at wide receiver. Yet, the team’s faith in their starting QB has not wavered and it is reportedly part of why they have been on the trade block trying to find him more weapons.

Carolina Panthers fear Bryce Young being overloaded with coaching information

But, trying to fix his early season struggles is a top priority, and a new report suggests the team may have identified the issue. On Sunday, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports claimed “The Panthers have been charged with simplifying things for their rookie quarterback and just letting Bryce Young play.”

The reason they are trying to simplify things is a belief that there is a bit of information overload occurring when it comes to the various talented voices on the offensive coaching staff.

“For as bright as Young is, sources say he could be getting an overload of information from too many sources. That has resulted in uncharacteristic mistakes from the former Heisman winner, and it’s helped contribute to a sputtering offense,” Jones wrote.

The Carolina Panthers hired Frank Reich to be their new head coach and he is calling plays on offense this season. He also brought in Thomas Brown as the offensive coordinator and veteran NFL quarterback Josh McCown as the quarterbacks coach. Plus, Carolina added former Colts and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell to serve as a senior offensive assistant. It seems the opinions from all of these individuals are causing in-game processing issues for Young.

The Panthers face the Lions on Sunday afternoon.
