The NHL revealed Thursday that the Washington Capitals will be the Carolina Hurricanes’ opponent for the 2023 NHL Stadium Series game at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
Carolina was originally supposed to host the game in the 2020-21 season, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The game is scheduled for Feb. 18, 2023.
The Hurricanes will be the 28th NHL team to participate in a regular-season outdoor game. The Tampa Bay Lightning became No. 27 last month when they defeated the Nashville Predators 3-2 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn.
The Capitals are 3-0-0 in outdoor games. They last appeared in the Stadium Series in 2018, when they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
“Having previously participated in the 2018 Stadium Series in Annapolis, Maryland, we know the amazing atmosphere the event provides and are excited to perform on the national stage in such a marquee event,” Capitals president Dick Patrick said in a statement. “We look forward to working with the league and Carolina Hurricanes to offer hockey fans an incredible outdoor experience next February.”
Carter-Finley Stadium is home to the North Carolina State Wolfpack football team and neighbors PNC Arena, the Hurricanes’ home arena.
