Last season, Cam Akers requested a trade from the Los Angeles Rams and spent three weeks away from the team due to being unhappy with his role in the offense. Now, the Rams are turning the tides, making Akers inactive for Sunday’s Week 2 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers due to a coach’s decision.
According to Jay Glazer, the Rams are already working on trading the former second-round pick and have reached out to several teams.

Despite Akers and the Rams being at odds in the past, this development comes as a surprise after not only starting in Week 1 but also getting the third-most carries of his career in the 30-13 win over Seattle. Yet, those carries weren’t very effective, with Akers only mustering 29 yards, averaging the fourth-worst yards per attempt in his career. Perhaps the only positives were scoring a one-yard touchdown in a winning effort.
Yet, just one game into his fourth season with the Rams, Akers could already be on the way out. He’s under contract for a reasonable $1.9 million and can become a restricted free agent in the offseason.
- Cam Akers stats last season: 786 rushing yards, 7 TD, 4.2 YPC, 13 receptions, 117 receiving yards
Akers, 24, is coming off the best season of his young career and should garner interest from teams looking to add an experienced runner to their backfield. The Minnesota Vikings might have some interest thanks to coach Kevin O’Connell’s time in L.A. with Akers and a paltry rushing attack averaging 2.7 YPC through two games. The Carolina Panthers could be another team to watch, with offensive coordinator Thomas Brown spending three seasons with the Rams with Akers, including the first two years as his running backs coach.
