Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe will be sidelined for the rest of the season because of the knee injury he sustained Saturday, the team announced Monday.

McCabe underwent an MRI on Sunday one day after departing in the third period of Buffalo’s 3-2 win at New Jersey. He was helped off the ice after being hurt when trying to check Devils center Nico Hischier.

McCabe was diagnosed with damage to his ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee.

“I had tears two nights ago already,” Sabres coach Ralph Krueger said Monday. “It was pretty clear on the doctor’s first assessment we were dealing with a really serious setback. The confirmation just underlines the pain that we feel for the person, first and foremost, and then the player that we’ve lost for the season.”

The 27-year-old alternate captain finishes the season with one goal and two assists in 13 games. In eight NHL seasons, he has 18 goals and 59 assists in 353 career games, all with Buffalo. McCabe was a second-round pick by the Sabres in the 2012 NHL Draft.
