The Buffalo Bills haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1994 and they have never won an NFL championship in their franchise history. However, after perennial playoff disappointments, head coach Sean McDermott is ready to guarantee the franchise will hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

McDermott and quarterback Josh Allen have played huge roles in helping turn the franchise around. After going 17 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, Buffalo made the postseason in 2017. Since then, the Bills have reached the playoffs in five consecutive years from 2019-’23.

However, each year has delivered heartbreak in January. From the infamous 13 seconds remaining in the 2021 AFC Divisional Round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and most recently Tyler Bass kicking wide right on a potential game-tying field goal in the Divisional Round against Kansas City, devastation has become the norm.

Evidently, McDermott isn’t shaken by it. Weeks after experiencing more playoff heartbreak which came just months after he appeared to be on the hot seat when Buffalo sat on the playoff bubble, the Bills’ head coach is now guaranteeing a Super Bowl.

Speaking to Tim Graham of The Athletic, McDermott said that despite the yearly playoff losses the team’s relentless pursuit of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy is essentially guaranteed to win them a Super Bowl.

“It’s not a matter of if. It’s just a matter of when, That is the relentless pursuit.”

Sean McDermott on the Buffalo Bills’ Super Bowl hopes

McDermott didn’t indicate any inside knowledge suggesting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is undefeated against Buffalo in the playoffs, intends to retire. The Bills’ head coach also didn’t seem worried about the team’s worrisome cap situation, which is expected to result in a talent exodus this offseason.

On the other hand, McDermott’s comment is also very open-ended with the prediction leaving the door open to the possibility that the Bills win a Super Bowl decades from now when he is long retired and NFL rosters look completely different. Still, given Mahomes’ tendency to use everything as motivation, he’ll probably remember this the next time the Chiefs face the Bills in the playoffs.
