Buffalo Bills veteran Shaq Lawson claims the reason why he shockingly shoved a fan during the team’s Week 12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles came after the rowdy fan was threatening the lives of his and his teammate’s families.

On Sunday afternoon, Buffalo blew an early lead in a major matchup against the league-leading Eagles and eventually lost to the NFC East squad in overtime, 37-34. The defeat dropped the team’s record to 6-6 and pushed them further outside the current AFC playoff picture.

The disappointing result was just one of many in a season where there was real hope that the roster could finally reach its potential and get Buffalo back to their first Super Bowl since 1994. However, things seemed to hit a tipping point during the game when Shaq Lawson and Jordan Phillips were caught on camera verbally confronting a fan in the stands, and the clash ended with Lawson actually shoving the unknown individual.

It is unclear if punishment is coming from the NFL or the Bills due to the incident. However, on Tuesday the 29-year-old apologized for the ugly moment but also explained what led to the shocking altercation with the Eagles fan.

“Those of you who know me know that I’m all about the fans, and I have a lot of respect for the game I play and my opponents,” Lawson wrote on Instagram. “Before the game started yesterday, there was a fan behind our bench, who was making life-threatening remarks toward us and our families. We asked Philadelphia security to remove the fan, but he was allowed to stay for the entire game.

“Eventually, our emotions boiled over, and I made a mistake. For that, I apologize, but there are certain lines that should not be crossed.”

The Buffalo Bills will look to get back into the win column in two weeks when they welcome the Kansas City Chiefs for a home game on Dec. 10.
