The Cleveland Browns acquired quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Buffalo Bills back in March to be a bridge starting quarterback. Once the team selected Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall the following month, it became apparent that Taylor would be nothing more than a stopgap option.
As Mayfield continues to dazzle during training camp, the 29-year-old Taylor is slated to be Cleveland’s Week 1 starter.
In talking about the quarterback’s future in Ohio, Browns general manager John Dorsey indicated that he’s more than open to negotiating an extension with the Pro Bowler.
“I just want to see Tyrod do what he’s done in the past. He’s a natural born leader. He’s had an excellent camp so far. I want to see it unfold,” Dorsey said, via The Ringer. “There may come a point here where I call his representatives in October and say, ‘Let’s strike something up.'”
Taylor is set to become a free agent following the 2018 season and boasts a $16 million cap hit.
In three years as Buffalo’s starter, Taylor put up 65 total touchdowns compared to 18 interceptions. He’s more than capable of holding down the fort until Mayfield is ready.
