Last year, Brian Daboll and the New York Giants entered the season with fresh confidence in their starting quarterback. Daniel Jones was coming off the best season of his career, recording 22 total touchdowns and five interceptions while leading the G-Men to their first playoff win since Eli Manning and Co. took home a Super Bowl trophy in 2012.
The Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract, and everyone expected an even better season in 2023. Yet, that’s not what happened at all. Big Blue got embarrassed in their season opener, losing 40-0 to the Dallas Cowboys, and all hope was lost. As sad as it sounds, the season didn’t get much better from there.
Daboll’s squad finished the year with a 6-11 record, with their franchise quarterback suffering a torn ACL in November. The offense was pathetic with Jones in the lineup, thanks in large part to the offensive line allowing more sacks than any other team, by 20.
Other quarterbacks provided a spark, with both Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito showing signs of life for a Giants offense that scored the third-fewest points in the NFL, but Coach Daboll’s offense still wasn’t getting the job done.

Now, we can’t go two days without a rumor about the Giants drafting a quarterback or possibly trading up to get the prospect they covet most. Keep in mind that the Giants also signed Drew Lock in free agency, which led some to assume he’d compete for the starting role. Comments from Seahawks GM John Schneider didn’t help, even if Lock refuted them later, saying he signed on to be the backup.

But what about the Giants’ head coach? What does Coach Daboll think about the Giants’ QB situation ahead of the NFL Draft? Daboll made it clear. The Giants are riding with Daniel Jones when he’s healthy.
“We’re excited to have Drew, and he knows what his role is going to be,” Daboll said. “He’s going to get a lot of reps this spring, he needs to learn our system, but again excited to get Daniel back, when he gets back he’ll be the guy.”

Keep in mind that it is smokescreen season. The Giants head coach is saying one thing, noting that they’re sticking with Daniel Jones, yet the front office is doing another, meeting with J.J. McCarthy behind closed doors. Somewhere lurking in the middle is the truth. We just won’t know it until April 25, when the NFL Draft kicks off.
