The Green Bay Packers famously traded up for quarterback Jordan Love in the first round this past April, which of course was stunning because they still have Aaron Rodgers. Previously, former Packers star Brett Favre, who can relate to Rodgers, shared that his former understudy was upset about the pick.
Now we’re hearing a bit more about exactly why.
Brett Favre: Aaron Rodgers upset Packers ‘didn’t get immediate help’
It would be easy to assume Rodgers was upset that the Packers drafted his eventual replacement. However, Favre shared that aspect isn’t what really got under Rodgers’ skin.
“My discussions with Aaron,” Favre said, per TMZ Sports. “I never got the sense that he was upset that they had signed a quarterback but more so didn’t get immediate help.”
Favre also said, “it just sends the wrong message.”
It’s hard to argue with that logic. The Packers were clearly one of the best teams in the NFC last season. The one thing they needed perhaps more than anything else was more weapons for Rodgers to work with in the passing game. Instead, they selected his replacement and didn’t address that need whatsoever at any point in the draft.
Fans were very upset about that, and nobody could blame Rodgers if he felt the same way.
Favre wants Packers to use Jordan Love like the Saints use Taysom Hill
Now that the Packers are stuck with their draft picks, it’s time to move on. Speaking to that, Favre had an idea about how Love can be valuable to the franchise as a rookie in 2020.
“I think there’s ways to incorporate it much like Taysom Hill with the Saints,” Favre said, per TMZ Sports. “Use him as a halfback, a halfback pass, but occasionally let him run it just to show that you’ll do that. Something like that.”
Rodgers is clearly still capable of leading an offense to great heights. Last season he put up pretty decent stats playing with head coach Matt LaFleur for the first time, passing for 4,002 yards with 26 touchdowns and just four interceptions.
If Love can spark some big plays, then great. But by no means to the Packers need an upgrade at this position right now.
