After seeing their pitching staff collectively struggle in 2023, it’s been well-known that the Boston Red Sox are hunting for improvements to their rotation. This chase included pursuing Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but evidently, the Red Sox were not the right fit for the Japanese MVP.
Yet, there are several other available free agent pitchers who can likely still improve the Red Sox’s starting rotation in 2024. But Red Sox fans will be pleased to know that Boston’s front office hasn’t given up on their hunt just yet.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Red Sox have been linked to another Japanese pitcher, Shota Imanaga, who was a two-time NPB All-Star. Imanaga may not command as much as Yamamoto on the open market, but others, like ESPN’s Jeff Passan, have suggested he may still top $100 million in free agency.
In addition to Imanaga, the Red Sox have been connected to signing former All-Star Lucas Giolito, World Series champion Jordan Montgomery, and also possibly retaining James Paxton. No matter what, look for the Red Sox to make some additions to their pitching staff this offseason.
