Bobby Wagner spent the first 11 seasons of his career leading the Seattle Seahawks’ defense as the middle linebacker. Then, after the Seahawks fell back to a 7-10 record in 2021, Wagner stunningly joined his longtime NFC West division rivals and signed with the Los Angeles Rams in pursuit of his second Super Bowl ring. But the Rams didn’t return to contender status, and he returned to Seattle. But Wagner’s contract only lasted one year, setting him up for free agency this offseason again.

Now, on the first official day of free agency, the six-time All-Pro linebacker has a new home.

According to Ian Rapoport, Wagner is signing with the Washington Commanders on a one-year contract with a max value of $8.5 million, including $6M in guarantees.

Signing in Washington reunites Wagner with head coach Dan Quinn, his defensive coordinator for two seasons in Seattle from 2013-14, including their Super Bowl victory.

Wagner’s arrival helps patch up what was recognized as a porous defense in Washington, ranking dead-last in the NFL, allowing 30.5 points per game. Being that Wagner led the NFL with 183 tackles while recording 3.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and a fumble recovery, the 33-year-old should have plenty left to offer Washington, too.

Wagner finished with a respectable 82.4 grade from Pro Football Focus last season, good for 14th among middle linebackers.
