Bills HC confirms Josh Allen competing for starting job

Bills quarterback Josh Allen

Josh Allen and Nathan Peterman are now directly in competition with one another for the starting quarterback job of the Buffalo Bills.

Head coach Sean McDermott told reporters Monday morning that Allen would be working with the first-team offense in Monday’s practice while Peterman runs the second-team offense, and that it’s a rotation, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.

Then McDermott made it absolutely clear that this competition is still wide open, saying “competitions are open until they’re not.”

During the team’s second preseason game, Allen worked with the second-team offense while Peterman mopped up at the end of the game. AJ McCarron got the start but struggled before suffering a fractured collarbone that took him out of the competition altogether.

After an embarrassing moment in his first preseason game, Allen rose to the occasion last Friday against Cleveland, completing 9-of-13 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown while showing strong command of the offense.

It’s going to be fascinating to see who gets the start in Week 3 of the preseason when the Bills take on the Cincinnati Bengals. The third preseason game is typically when teams play their starters well into the second half, but obviously Buffalo doesn’t yet have a solid situation to stand on.
