If Andy Reid decided to surprisingly walk away from the Kansas City Chiefs after a potential Super Bowl win in two weeks, a top NFL insider believes Bill Belichick being his replacement isn’t an impossible idea.

On Sunday afternoon, the Chiefs will look to add to their resume as the league’s latest dynasty team when they try to secure a fourth birth to the Super Bowl in five years. However, there is a unique angle to that possibility that has been growing in speculation recently. And that’s the possibility of head coach Andy Reid retiring if the team won a third championship in five seasons.

While Reid has tried to quiet the discourse about his future this month, the idea only seems possible because there was a huge amount of speculation this time last year that the 65-year-old seriously considered taking an extended break from the sport.

Well, on Thursday ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter added a whole new layer to the talk when he had some fun and speculated about the idea of legendary head coach Bill Belichick being Reid’s replacement next season.

Could Bill Belichick be an option for the Kansas City Chiefs if Andy Reid retired?

“This is purely speculative, I want to be clear. But we’ve heard over and over about the possibility that at some point in time, Andy Reid could walk away from football. So if the Chiefs were to win the Super Bowl this year, could that make him more likely to walk?” Schefter suggested on an episode of “First Take.”

“And if he did walk, and you’re the Kansas City Chiefs and Bill Belichick was sitting out there, would that not be an instant possibility? To get take a run at, arguably, the greatest coach of all time. To replace one legend with another. Again, we’re having fun, we’re throwing things out there. But it’s interesting to watch if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl.”

After the Atlanta Falcons chose to pass on Belichick this week and instead hire Raheem Morris, the options for the New England Patriots legend seem limited. Especially since he allegedly turned down opportunities with the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, and is a long shot to land the openings with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.

With the Chiefs’ defense now turning into one of the best in the league, it would almost seem fitting for the defensive guru to arrive and usher in a new defensive-driven era in Kansas City history as they hunt down more championships. Furthermore, if it doesn’t happen this year, it could still be an option in 2025.
