Angels star Shohei Ohtani to undergo surgery, out for the season

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels announced on Thursday that two-way star Shohei Ohtani will undergo surgery on his left knee Friday and is expected to miss 8-12 weeks.

This news comes pretty much out of left field. In fact, Ohtani homered against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.

The reigning AL Rookie of the Year has not pitched all season after he underwent Tommy John Surgery during the winter.

Though, he’s been tremendous at the plate. The Japanese sensation is hitting .286 with 18 homers, 62 RBI and a .848 OPS in 106 games this season.

Ohtani joins Mike Trout on the bench for Los Angeles as the team finishes up yet another lost season. While Trout is expected back some time soon, Ohtani won’t be seen until spring training this coming February.
