The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium, giving Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes more wins by a coach-quarterback combo at Allegiant than anyone in Las Vegas Raiders history. Even more surprising, Reid is specifically crediting the Raiders for helping his team win the Super Bowl.

Kansas City has never lost a game in Las Vegas since Allegiant Stadium opened. The $1.9-billion home that owner Mark Davis and Las Vegas officials built to host years of playoff memories for the Raiders, has turned into a second home for the Chiefs.

  2. Antonio Pierce, Aidan O’Connell – 4
  3. Josh McDaniels, Derek Carr – 4
  4. Jon Gruden, Derek Carr – 4

However, the Chiefs did lose at home to the Raiders this season. It was one of the biggest reasons why coach Antonio Pierce is returning in 2024, because he won over the locker room and proved he could beat the Chiefs in Kansas City.

While that 20-14 victory over Mahomes and the Chiefs is a point of pride for Raiders fans this season, Reid revealed after Super Bowl LVIII that it is one of the reasons why Kansas City ultimately hoised the Lombardi Trophy.

As highlighted by Peter King in Football Morning in America, Andy Reid credited the Raiders’ coach for the victory over Kansas City that proved to be a critical turning point for the Chiefs’ season. Reid even texted Pierce after the game to thank him.

“I texted him. I just said, Hey, beautiful facility, first of all. And I appreciate you kicking our tail because you taught us a lesson. You get complacent in this business, the margin between winning and losing is tiny. You better step up. There’s a time and a place for these players that have been here before. You know what it takes. If you’re the veteran that’s dropping the ball or you’re the veteran getting the penalties, you better figure it out. Figure it out quick. This season’s gonna go down.”

The loss on Christmas Day to Las Vegas truly became a critical moment for Kansas City. Between the combination of losing to a division rival in a game where the Chiefs’ defense didn’t allow a touchdown but Kansas City’s offense struggled, the locker room and coaching staff used the loss for motivation.

While it could be argued that if not for that loss, the Chiefs would’ve rode a four-game winning streak into the playoffs, being defeated at home by the Raiders changed Kansas City’s mentality and got everyone to improve. So, in some ways, the Raiders helped their rival win a Super Bowl and it happened in the heart of Las Vegas.
