Alyssa Nakken makes history with San Francisco Giants as first woman to interview for MLB managerial vacancy

Baseball purists are likely already familiar with the name Alyssa Nakken. Back in 2020, she made history, becoming the first woman to work on an MLB coaching staff by joining the San Francisco Giants. Three years later, she’s breaking another barrier.

The Giants are rounding up candidates for their managerial vacancy after letting Gabe Kapler go with just three games left in the regular season. According to The Athletic, Nakken also got an interview this past week, making her the first woman to ever interview for an MLB manager position.

Nakken’s meeting was part of a group of first-round interviews the Giants are conducting. She also sat in with bench coach Kai Correa and third base coach Mark Hallberg.

She has been with the Giants in some capacity since 2014 when she started as an intern in the baseball operations department. Yet, Nakken didn’t stop there. She’s continued to rise up the ranks ever since and now appears to be receiving consideration to be the new manager for the Giants heading into the 2024 season.

Nakken also holds the honor of being the first woman to coach on an MLB field when she filled in for first-base coach Antoan Richardson following an ejection in 2022.

The Giants hope to have their new manager hired before the start of MLB free agency, which begins in early November, five days after the World Series is done.
