Just before veterans are due to report for training camp, the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a new contract with star running back Raheem Mostert.
Mostert’s agent, Brett Tessler, announced the news Monday.
Raheem Mostert had requested a trade from 49ers
Mostert had previously made it clear that he was not happy with his old contract. So much so that last month, the running back requested a trade from the NFC champion 49ers.
That request caught many by surprise. After all, Mostert had just gotten a three-year, $8.7 million contract extension back in March of 2019. However, Mostert was getting paid for his outstanding work on special teams on that old deal.
After what he did for the 49ers in 2019, he wanted to get paid more in line with his production.
Huge stats put Raheem Mostert on the national map
Before the 2019 campaign, Mostert had put up just 297 rushing yards with one touchdown in his NFL career. The former undrafted free agent out of Purdue had made his mark on special teams almost exclusively.
Then last season, he was called on to do significantly more, and he produced big time for the 49ers.
During the 2019 campaign, he put up 952 total yards at a clip of 6.3 yards per touch while scoring 10 touchdowns. He added 344 total yards and five touchdowns in just three playoff games.
Now, he’s back on track to do some more damage for the team many believe could get back to the Super Bowl in 2020.
