It was just a few months ago that former undrafted free-agent running back Raheem Mostert was breaking records for the San Francisco 49ers during their run to the Super Bowl.

The Purdue product absolutely dominated the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game and was tremendous throughout the entire season. It led to San Francisco trading Matt Breida and preparing for itself to ride Mostert throughout the 2020 season.

Not so fast.

Raheem Mostert has now requested a trade

The news comes to us via Mostert’s agent Brett Tessler and is pretty shocking.

San Francisco signed Mostert to a three-year, $8.7 million contract extension back in March of 2019 after he showed out big time on special teams the season prior. Though, the 28-year-old back took on a large role in San Francisco’s offense this past season.

Raheem Mostert’s stats tell us a story of an underrated back

Mostert, 28, put up 952 total yards at a clip of 6.3 yards per touch while scoring 10 touchdowns in 2019. He added 344 total yards and five touchdowns in just three playoff games.

Even with the running back market lagging behind other positions, Mostert is worth more than the $2.9 million he’s earning on his deal with the 49ers.

It remains to be seen if San Francisco will give in to Mostert’s trade demands. As noted above, the team dealt Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins during the spring. It has Tevin Coleman and an injury-plagued Jerick McKinnon as its two other primary backs heading into training camp later this month.
