2023 U.S. Open: TV schedule, predictions, tee times, and more

It is major tournament week for the third time this year, with the U.S. Open set to begin. Suddenly, there is only more major tournament after this week, the Open Championship.

This year’s U.S. Open heads west to the Los Angeles Country Club. This is the first time in 75 years that the City of Angels is hosting a U.S. Open.

Last week on the PGA Tour, Nick Taylor, a Canadian himself, defeated Tommy Fleetwood on the fourth playoff hole of the RBC Canadian Open with a walk-off 72-foot eagle putt.

With the victory, Taylor vaults 26 spots to No. 6 of the FedEx Cup standings while Fleetwood moved up 18 spots to No. 33 in the standings and 29 points away from the No. 30 spot, which allows the top 30 to play for the Tour Championship in August to conclude the season.

From one national tournament in a new venue to another, LA Country Club is hosting a U.S. Open for the first time. The last time a new golf course hosted a U.S. Open was in 2017, when America’s national championship was hosted at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, with Brooks Koepka winning.

Koepka, who won the PGA Championship last month, also won the 2018 U.S. Open to be the last back-to-back winner of this event and the first in 30 years.

Twelve months ago, Matt Fitzpatrick became the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open in more than 100 years at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., near Boston.

Playing on the North Course of LA Country Club, the field will go through the toughest test in golf this week as it is not only vital to his fairways and greens in regulations, but players will have to strategically make their way around the course in order to try and hoist the trophy on Sunday.

The 18-hole LACC North Course will have a par of 70, measuring 7,421 yards.

Who are some of the top golfers in the U.S. Open field?

PGA: U.S. Open - Practice Round
Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

All of the game’s top players are present for the U.S. Open, except for World. No. 11 Will Zalatoris, who continues rehab from back surgery a couple months ago. Last year, Zalatoris was inches away from forcing a playoff on the 72nd hole, coming up short to Matt Fitzpatrick, who had to hit his approach from the fairway bunker in order to become the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since 1911.

Trailing behind Fitzpatrick and Zalatoris last year was current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is the biggest favorite this week at +700 odds, according to Vegas Insider.

Among the top 10 below Scheffler, four are looking for their first major win in Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele and Max Homa. In six previous U.S. Opens, Schauffele has five top-10s with a 14th place last year.

Meanwhile, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson, ranked No. 83 in the world, is looking to complete the career grand slam, despite having six previous runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open.

Looking to get the third leg of the career grand slam is Collin Morikawa, ranked No. 18 in the world. Morikawa is one of the few in the field with experience at LACC. Morikawa, along with Scheffler, was part of the 2017 Walker Cup team that defeated Team Great Britain and Ireland 19-7. Morikawa was one of three Americans to go a perfect 4-0 over the two-day event.

It is going to be a wild week with the stars in Hollywood and all the lights on the field in one of the most lucrative neighborhoods in the entire country.

5 players with the best chance to win U.S. Open trophy

PGA: U.S. Open - Practice Round
Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler comes to the U.S. Open looking to hoist his first U.S. Open trophy and second major victory this week. Ranked No. 1 in the world, he has a little experience at LACC, playing with Morikawa during the 2017 Walker Cup for Team USA. Scheffler did not do as well as Morikawa, but the experience is key, especially when the stakes are raised.

Scheffler has seven top-5 finishes in his last nine starts, dating back to his PLAYERS Championship victory in March. In addition, the Texas Longhorn alumnus leads the PGA Tour in scoring average, greens in regulation percentage, and both strokes gained: total and approach.

Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland is one of the hottest players coming into the U.S. Open after a win at the Memorial Tournament and is one of a couple players to finish inside the top 10 at both the Masters and the PGA Championship earlier this year.

Hovland is inside the top 12 in strokes gained: tee to green, off the tee and approach the green, while being sixth on the PGA Tour in proximity to the hole, which attacking pins is going to be vital.

Brooks Koepka

Brooks Koepka looks to have revived himself from his late 2010s major tournament surge, claiming the Wanamaker Trophy last month. During last month’s PGA Championship, he cruised his way to a four-shot victory at Oak Hill. The best part is that he is healthy, both physically and mentally, only focusing on the course and not the outside noise.

With a win, he will join Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson with six major victories.

Jon Rahm

The No. 2 ranked player in the world comes to Los Angeles Country looking to get back in the winner’s circle for the first time since the Masters Tournament, which was his fourth win of the season. Rahm’s lead in the FedEx Cup standings is down to 402 points to Scheffler, which is less than the most amount of points given to a PGA Tour player.

At one point this season Rahm, who won the last U.S. Open in California two years ago at Torrey Pines, recorded seven top 10s to begin his 2022-23 PGA Tour slate. Rahm is going to try and rekindle that feeling, which included three victories in a five-start stretch and going back-to-back at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express, another Southern California venue.

Max Homa

If there’s anyone in the field with the most experience, it is LA native Max Homa, who attended UC Berkley and helped the Golden Bears to a 2013 Pac-12 Championship at LACC with a 9-under 61 that remains the course. Homa is one of the few that has stroke play experience among the field as he looks to capture his first major victory and third this season.
