The Seattle Seahawks entered the offseason needing an edge rusher, but they made a big move to boost their secondary. With the 2020 NFL season fast approaching, the Seahawks could be on the verge of another splash to improve their pass rush.
As training camp begins with plenty of great talent still available and rumors that another big move could be looming, two Pro Bowl edge rushers are reportedly on Seattle’s radar.
Seahawks interested in Everson Griffen, Clay Matthews
More than five months after he voided his contract with the Minnesota Vikings, defensive end Everson Griffen remains a free agent. While the 32-year-old hasn’t signed with a team this summer, it’s not due to a lack of interest.
Griffen, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, has received interest from the Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and multiple other clubs. Now, per NFL Network’s Michael Silver, the Seattle Seahawks are also interested in Griffen and outside linebacker Clay Matthews.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, free agents haven’t been allowed to work out for teams this summer. But, the league recently allowed for clubs to bring them in for physicals.
Griffen earned another trip to the Pro Bowl this past year, racking up 24 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss and eight sacks in 15 games. After spending a decade in Minnesota, he remains a force off the edge and would welcome the chance to play for a Super Bowl contender this year.
Matthews, entering his age-34 season, was incredibly productive in limited snaps for the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Despite missing multiple games with a broken jaw, the six-time Pro Bowl pick racked up eight sacks.
Both players would be considerably cheaper than Jadeveon Clowney, who also remains a free agent. If the Seahawks sign either to bolster their pass rush, this team will be a legitimate Super Bowl contender in 2020.
