WATCH: Surreal scene as Nationals World Series flag raised

Nationals and Mets MLB Opening Day

The Washington Nationals are hosting the New York Yankees in the first game of the 2020 MLB season in D.C. Thursday evening.

This comes months after the original start of the season was suspended due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It also comes with the Nationals raising their World Series flag.

The scene was surreal in the nation’s capital as Queen’s “We are the Champions” was played inside an empty Nationals Park.

There’s going to be a lot of firsts during the Major League Baseball season. Games being played without fans in attendance. The National League finally boasting a designated hitter. The playoff field expanding to 16 teams.

It’s still eerie to see a championship flag raised in front of an empty stadium. This is normally time for fans to celebrate with their team.

As for the Nationals, they are without stud youngster Juan Soto after he tested positive for COVID-19. That came after multiple players had already decided to opt out of the season.

At the very least, we now have baseball back on our television screens. That’s what we have wanted over the past several months.
