No talks scheduled between Dak Prescott, Cowboys on eve of extension deadline

San Francisco 49ers rumors: Dak Prescott

It has been trending in this direction for month now. The Dallas Cowboys and star quarterback Dak Prescott remain at an impasse when it comes to contract extension talks.

Now comes this piece of information from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport indicating that nothing is expected to get done.

No talks scheduled between Dak Prescott and his Cowboys

The deadline to sign franchise-tagged players to contract extensions comes Wednesday.

As noted in the report, there’s little reason to believe that Prescott and the Cowboys will magically turn this thing around and come to terms on an extension.

Again, this is not a huge surprise. The two sides have not held discussions in recent months. Prescott wants a four-year deal that will make him among the highest-paid players in the NFL. While the Cowboys are willing to do that, they want the Pro Bowl quarterback to take a five-year contract. The recent mega extension Patrick Mahomes signed with the Kansas City Chiefs has also complicated things in this regard.

Dak Prescott’s franchise tag value

Prescott will now earn north of $31 million for the Cowboys next season. Based on per-year average, this makes him the eighth highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

The two sides now will not be able to negotiate a long-term deal until the new league year starts next month.

Dak Prescott’s stats tell us a story

There’s no reason to believe that Prescott will settle for less moving forward. He’s been clear about his intentions. Again, the Mahomes’ extension adds another layer to this.

Prescott, 26, recorded nearly 5,200 total yards with 33 total touchdowns and 11 interceptions during a career-best performance in 2019. If he’s able to duplicate this in 2020 while leading the Cowboys to a playoff appearances, the value of his extension will increase big time. That’s for sure.
