The players have yet to approve a plan for a truncated 2020 season put forth by MLB owners earlier this month.
At issue here is a revenue share plan on top of players being asked to take prorated salaries for the 82-game slate amid the ongoing pandemic.
Not playing the season would cost the players and Major League Baseball billions of dollars. However, playing the season without fans in attendance (as expected) would also come with a major hit.
According to the Associated Press, each game played without fans in attendance would come with a staggering $620,000 loss. As for the large-market teams, the New York Yankees would lose a whopping $312 million over the course of the season.

The numbers are downright ridiculous.
- New York Yankees: $312 million
- Los Angeles Dodgers: $232 million
- New York Mets: $214 million
- Chicago Cubs: $201 million
- Boston Red Sox: $199 million
These are the financial complexities that come with attempting to resume sports amid the current global COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also one of the major hurdles MLB and its players must overcome for the season to start in early July as planned.
