Professional sports stars from all walks of life are taking a stand against racial injustice in the United States following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department earlier this week.
While the officer in question has been charged with third degree murder and manslaughter, it has not proven to be enough for a large part of the American society. The ugly scenes that played out in pretty much every major city Friday night is a prime example of this.
Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons is now the latest to speak up. In doing so, he’s honoring Floyd’s memory and calling for the end of blatant racism while saying “enough is enough.”
Mr. Floyd’s infamous last words were “I can’t breathe” as former police officer Derek Chauvin killed the man.
These types of non-violent protests are what’s needed right now. In fact, Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown plans to march later on Saturday.
What is not needed is the violence and destruction we saw on a national level Friday night. That doesn’t do any good.
Simmons is the latest sports star to speak out against racism. He’s doing so in a clear way without inciting violence.
