His Golden State Warriors only had a few handfuls of games remaining once the NBA season was suspended back on March 11.
Fresh off five consecutive Western Conference titles, head coach Steve Kerr and the Warriors were in the midst of an injury-plagued 2019-20 campaign that saw them win 15 of their first 65 games.
With the season now having been suspended for six weeks, there’s no telling once it will return. A lot of that will depend on if the United States flattens the COVID-19 curve and whether widespread testing becomes available.
As it relates to Mr. Kerr, he’s already operating as if the remainder of the season will be canceled.
This represents the first time a high-profile figure has even mentioned the possibility that the season might not resume.
Though, it’s two-fold for the Warriors. Even if the season were to resume at some point this coming summer, Golden State wouldn’t have much to play for. It make sense to go into full-scale offseason mode.
Unlike Major League Baseball and the National Football League, the NBA is in a time crunch. The 2020 NBA Draft is set to take place in June. If the season doesn’t get going any time before that, it pushes back the entire 2020-21 calendar, including the start of next season.
The NBA had been hoping that widespread testing would help it return in Las Vegas without fans in attendance. That doesn’t seem too likely given recent events as it relates to said testing.
