The sports world remains on hiatus due to the entire COVID-19 pandemic plaguing the United States right now.
There’s no telling when live sports will come back. That’s despite the fact that there’s some optimism it could return this summer.
As it relates to the college sports world, it’s long been expected that football would not start on time in late August.
In a survey of FBS athletic directors, Brett McMurphy of Stadium found out that a vast majority of them believe the season will be delayed until October or November.
Of those surveyed, the results speak for themselves.
- Season starts as scheduled: 24%
- Conference play starting October/November: 20%
- 12-game schedule October/November: 41%
- Season starting during the spring: 3%
- No college football season: 1%
There’s good news and bad news on this front. By a whopping total of 96%, these athletic directors believe the 2020 season will in fact take place at some point this year. The bad news? It doesn’t look like we’re going to see September college football.
The idea of the 2020 college football season starting some time next spring has been bandied about in the past. That now looks to be off the table.
It really is all about the United States being able to test its citizens on a widespread basis. That has not happened as of yet.
In a conference call with Vice President Mike Pence earlier this month, commissioners of the top conferences in college football noted that the season won’t start until campuses are open for students.
Until that happens, everything is conjecture. But this seems to be some pretty good news.
