Report: Packers to target QB early in 2020 NFL Draft

Steelers, quarterback

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers is technically not showing any signs of slowing down. The 36-year-old Green Bay Packers signal caller is coming off a 2019 season that saw him throw for over 4,000 yards with 26 touchdowns and four interceptions.

This does not mean general manager Brian Gutekunst is going to leave a potential long-term Rodgers replacement to chance.

According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, sources close to the Packers believe they are going to target a quarterback early in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Selecting at the end of Round 1, Green Bay is not in position to add one of the top quarterbacks in the draft class. However, there could be options with their first-round pick.

  • Jalen Hurts: This former Alabama quarterback dominated in his only season with Oklahoma, tallying north of 5,000 total yards and 52 touchdowns. He’s seen as a modern dual-threat signal caller.
  • Jacob Eason: Another player who transferred from one big-time program to another, Eason is seen as your more prototypical quarterback. The 6-foot-6 signal caller recorded 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season for Washington.
  • Jordan Love: This Utah State product is highly unlikely to be available at the end of the first round. In fact, Love is drawing interest in the top half of Day 1. If he is somehow available, the Packers will be an option.

There’s lesser prospects Green Bay can focus on early in the draft later this month. Though, the likes of Jake Fromm would be seen as reaches before the third round.

Green Bay has the following selections in the 2020 NFL Draft.

  • First round, 30th pick
  • Second round, 62nd pick
  • Third round, 94th pick
  • Fourth round, 136th pick
  • Fifth round, 175th pick
  • Sixth round, 192nd pick
  • Sixth round, 208th pick
  • Sixth round, 209th pick
  • Seventh round, 236th pick
  • Seventh round, 242nd pick

We previously mocked that Green Bay will trade up from the 30th pick. Whether the team would actually do that for a quarterback remains to be seen.

If not, Hurts and Eason will likely be their options in the first round should they target a signal caller. It’s certainly something to focus on as the draft nears.
