As ESPN keeps whiffing on stars to take over as its color analyst Monday Night Football, CBS is adding to its collection of top talent. Now, after signing Tony Romo to a record deal, CBS is putting together a super team of broadcasters with another top NFL analyst.
According to The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, FOX’s Charles Davis is leaving the network to join CBS and replace Dan Fouts as the network’s No. 2 analyst. Both sides reached a verbal agreement on Friday night that will put Davis and Ian Eagle together for years to come.
CBS made its first big move off the offseason by signing Romo to a massive deal worth more than $17 million per season. Romo emerged as a star alongside legendary broadcaster Jim Nantz as the network’s top pairing for NFL games.
After moving on from Hall of Famer Dan Fouts, CBS struck quickly to make its No. 2 broadcasting team as strong as any across television. It comes at the perfect time with CBS set to broadcast Super Bowl LV in 2021 and one of the newly expanded wild-card games.
NBC reached agreement on Friday to make Drew Brees its future NFL analyst, with a path for him to take over for Cris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football in a few years. Both networks have now made huge moves to strengthen their broadcasting teams at a time when the NFL is negotiating new television contracts.
Meanwhile, ESPN must continue its search to try and shake up the Monday Night Football broadcast following two disastrous seasons with Jason Witten in 2018 followed by Booger McFarland this past season.
