President Donald Trump held a conference call with the commissioners of all major North American professional sports on Saturday.
In said call, POTUS indicated that the 2020 NFL season should start as planned in September. This, despite the fact that the United States is currently the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic with north of 300,000 cases and 8,100-plus deaths.
As all sports take a break due to the growing pandemic, the start of the 2020 NFL season has been placed into question.
California Governor Gavin Newsom added to that during his daily press briefing on Saturday, pushing back against the idea that the season should start on time. Specifically, the governor noted that if the season does start, it will not be with fans in attendance in California.
The political differences between Trump and Newsom aside, the latter seems to be more in tune with reality right now.
As the most populous state in the union, California has nearly 11,000 cases of COVID-19. The apex of the virus is expected to hit the state within the next couple weeks.
As for the football season, we’re already hearing growing pessimism that it will start on time. California boasts three NFL teams in that of the Rams, Chargers and 49ers. Los Angeles is going to be the epicenter of COVID-19 in the state. Packing tends of thousands of fans into a stadium, regardless of the optimism, makes no real sense.
