Major League Baseball and its players came to an agreement last week that previewed what a reshaped 2020 season might look like due to the entire COVID-19 pandemic plaguing the United States.
Said agreement includes support for minor league players. We now have some more information on that. MLB released a statement on Tuesday noting that minor league players will receive $400 a week in compensation through either May 31 or when the season starts.
It might seem like pennies on the dollar and not even a liveable wage. That’s until we realize players are not permitted to train at facilities or with their clubs.
With hundreds of millions of Americans pretty much in full lockdown right now, the economics of the situation is bleak. At the very least, minor leaguers will get something to help them through these most difficult of times.
As it relates to the start of the baseball season, initial expectations were that it would being in June. That’s now likely been pushed back to July, at the earliest.
The COVID-19 situation in the United States is grim right now. Baseball and other sports who suspended their seasons will likely be on hiatus for the foreseeable future.
