Former LSU football star, two-sport athlete Orlando McDaniel dies of COVID-19

The state of Louisiana is quickly becoming one of the hardest-hit regions as the COVID-19 pandemic quickly spreads throughout the United States.

It’s impacting the sports world in a big way, too. It was just announced that former NFL quarterback Bobby Hebert lost his father at the age of 81.

Now comes this report indicating that former LSU football player and two-sport star Orlando McDaniel has passed away at the age of 59 from COVID-19.

“Orlando was a tireless worker for the youth in his area of (Dallas-Fort Worth) ,” LSU track coach Dennis Shaver said in a statement, via Robin Fambrough of The Advocate. “His youth North Texas Cheetahs Track Club, year after year, developed many of the great athletes competing for universities throughout the United States.”

McDaniel recorded 64 receptions for 1,184 yards in four seasons with LSU. He was a second-round pick of the Broncos back in 1982, but played in only three NFL games.

A legend during his time with the Tigers, McDaniel also finished second in the 1980 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the Men’s 110 meter hurdles.

He was serving as the head coach for the North Texas Cheetahs track program at the time of his death. Those close to McDaniel paid their respects to the man on Saturday, one day after his passing.

Our thoughts obviously go out to the LSU athletic family and those close to Mr. McDaniel during these most difficult of times.
