Ben Roethlisberger determined to return after ‘shocking and heartbreaking’ season-ending injury

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Monday morning that starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will undergo season-ending elbow surgery.

Roethlisberger issued a statement Monday afternoon in which he made it clear he will return to the Steelers following his recovery, sharing the injury is “shocking and heartbreaking” to him personally.

Roethlisberger is currently in the first year of a three-year deal worth $68 million. He’s earning $26.2 million in 2019, with cap hits of $33.5 and $31.5 million in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

The 37-year-old quarterback has been hinting at retirement for years now, and many have wondered if this injury would cause him to hang up his cleats. At least for now, that does not appears to be in the cards.
