In a breakout season full of amazing moments for San Diego Padres rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., his season may now be coming to an end due to an unfortunate injury.
San Diego’s skipper Andy Green told reporters on Friday that Tatis Jr. suffered a stress reaction in his lower back and he’ll likely miss the remainder of the season.
It’s a devastating blow for a team that still wanted to try and compete for a wild-card spot during the remainder of the season. Losing Tatis Jr. is also a hit for the fan base’s excitement for the team.
The 20-year-old shortstop quickly proved himself as one of the game’s best infielders in his first year. Tatis Jr. posted an outstanding .317/.379/.590 slash line with 22 home runs, 16 stolen bases and a .969 OPS.
Fortunately, the injury isn’t expected to impact Tatis Jr.’s availability for the 2020 season. The Padres will be counting on him coming back to help them compete for a playoff spot next season.
