Astros star Carlos Correa leaves game with back injury

This is not news the Houston Astros wanted as they prepare for the stretch run of the MLB season.

Star shortstop Carlos Correa exited early in Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers with what is being described as back discomfort

No matter the terminology used here, this has to be of concern for the World Series contenders. Any time we’re talking about the back, it’s an issue.

Correa, 24, missed two months due to a freak injury earlier this season. It stunted the growth we’ve seen from one of the game’s best young infielders.

Even then, Correa has played at a high level when on the field this season. He’s hitting .279 with 19 homers, 56 RBI and a .359 OBP in 71 games.

Houston has to be holding out hope that this injury is not serious. Despite a comfortable lead in the AL West, the team just dropped three of four to the second-place Oakland Athletics over the weekend.

Oakland is also getting some reinforcements for its pitching staff for the stretch run.
