One of the most intriguing storylines leading into NFL training camps later this month is whether Daniel Jones can wrestle the starting job away from Eli Manning.
According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, that narrative possesses little substance in real life.
“I spoke to a player during minicamp several weeks back and he told me, ‘look, Daniel Jones’ arm looks great. You see why he’s a high prospect and going to be a good quarterback.’ But he’s a long ways away. He’s very far behind Eli Manning in regards to knowing the offense, being a veteran, knowing how to get everyone lined up and put everything together,” Raanan said. “So, there’s not a real competition in regards to who is going to play in Week 1. Maybe it’s just a competition of, okay, when is Daniel Jones going to be caught up?”
Maybe this is the reason why Manning doesn’t view Jones as “the competition.”
It’ll be interesting to see if this holds up over training camp. Manning did not look great in terms of arm strength and accuracy this past spring, while Jones received plenty of praise from the coaching staff about being ready to start come Week 1.
