As the New York Mets continue to evaluate their options ahead of the trade deadline, the front office is reportedly exploring an insane scenario that could see it trade starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard and acquire another All-Star pitcher.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, New York is exploring the possibility of trading Syndergaard to San Diego for a package of young talent. The Mets would then use some of that package to land Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marcus Stroman.
While there are always some wild rumors that circulate leading up to the trade deadline, this would be one of the wildest moves to happen at the trade deadline in years.
As Rosenthal lays out, the deal would be an excellent move for the Padres as they land an ace to plug into their rotation. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays could potentially bring right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill to Toronto to be the aa star in the country where he grew up.
While the Mets could pick up additional prospects as part of the deal, they’d arguably receive a less talented pitcher in Stroman and only have him for the 2020 season compared to Syndergaard’s deal that runs through 2021.
It remains unlikely that a move of this magnitude is able to be pulled off. However, it would certainly lead to a major shakeup in baseball and be the first stunner of the trade deadline.
