One of baseball’s best prospects will begin the year in the majors. It was announced on Monday that Fernando Tatis Jr. will be on the Opening Day roster for the San Diego Padres.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune broke the news.
As a 19-year-old, Tatis hit .286/.355/.507 with 16 home runs in 353 Double-A at-bats last season. He hit .265/.345/.490 with two home runs in 49 at-bats in Cactus Play action in 2019.
While Tatis is young, expect him to play regularly in San Diego. Per MLB.com, Tatis is the No. 2-ranked prospect in baseball, trailing only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays. This move, along with signing Manny Machado, shows that the Padres are definitely trying to compete in 2019.
When his promotion would come was one of the pressing questions for the early part of the season. That’s obviously no longer the case.
