With his Dallas Cowboys up 13-3 late in the third quarter against the New Orleans Saints Thursday night, defensive end Randy Gregory committed a monumental penalty.
New Orleans was set to punt the ball back to Dallas on fourth-and-3. What followed was a dumb roughing the punter penalty on Gregory.
You just can’t do that. Three plays later, and Drew Brees hit wide receiver Keith Kirkwood on a 30-yard touchdown to pull the Saints within 13-10.
It’s just an absurdly bad play on Gregory’s part, and it made this game much closer than it would have been heading into the final stanza.
Needless to say, people had some strong reactions to this penalty.
