The gruesome Alex Smith injury not only was a huge blow to the player but also to his team, which went 6-3 this year before he was lost for the season.
On Monday, Washington head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged how difficult this is for the team, saying, “We’re all sick and heartbroken” over Smith’s injury but that “when something like this happens you have to move on,” per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.
That’s the truth.
And Washington has already moved on, out of necessity. Veteran Mark Sanchez was signed to back up Colt McCoy, who’ll be the starter going forward.
Washington still holds a one-game lead over Dallas in the NFC East with a 6-4 record. The two teams will meet up in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day in what will be a pivotal matchup for both clubs.
