Report: Cardinals could fire Mike McCoy if offense struggles Thursday

Mike McCoy has only been the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator for six regular season games. Even then, it seems the veteran coach is already on the hot seat.

Heading into their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Denver Broncos, these Cardinals rank 31st in the NFL in points per game (13.7) and dead last in yards per game (220.3). This has McCoy battling for his job.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, McCoy could very well be fired on Friday if the Cardinals’ offense doesn’t turn it around.

While Rapoport notes that first-year head coach Steve Wilks’ job is safe, he’ll certainly be looking to make a move on offense moving forward.

Specifically, the report focuses on David Johnson’s struggles at running back. Considered by some to be among the best all-around backs in the game, Arizona’s usage of Johnson has led to a ton of criticism.

Should that not change Thursday, McCoy could very well be cleaning out his desk in the desert before the weekend.
