Max Scherzer wants to play spoiler for Colorado Rockies

Max Scherzer

Even after recording 300 strikeouts in a season for the first time in his career, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer isn’t ready for his season to end. In fact, the 34-year-old wants to end another team’s season.

Scherzer, who became the sixth pitcher since 1900 to record 300-plus strikeouts in a season, doesn’t want to be shut down by the Nationals before Sunday’s game. If the stakes are high, he wants to face the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, a game that could determine if Colorado makes the postseason.

Colorado, which holds a one-game advantage in the N.L. West over the Los Angeles Dodgers, could face the Nationals with a chance to either automatically compete in the NLDS, play in a wild-card game or miss the playoffs completely.

Washington’s front office may opt to hold Scherzer back in the final game of the season given the team has nothing to play for in what has been a disastrous season.

For one of the most competitive players in all of baseball, this is his chance to compete in one last meaningful game this season and play spoiler to an N.L. opponent. Now fans will just have to wait and see if the team gives him the green light to start on Sunday.
