Report: Nationals’ Gio Gonzalez traded to the Brewers

Gio Gonzalez should be considered an ace-type pitcher.

After acquiring a relief pitcher earlier on Friday, the Milwaukee Brewers have now landed a starting pitcher to help provide some stability to their rotation.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Washington Nationals will reportedly send starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez to the Brewers.

Gonzalez, an impending free agent, should provide further stability to Milwaukee’s rotation. While he owns a 4.57 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 27 starts, Gonzalez’s track record is solid.

The 32-year-old southpaw posted a 2.96 ERA across 32 starts in 2017 and has often flashed the stuff of a mid-rotation starter. His 6.55 ERA since the All-Star Break this season is troublesome, but a change of scenery and landing in a competitive environment could change things.

Over the last 30 days, Milwaukee’s starters have combined for a 5.04 ERA after a strong start in the first half of the season. Even with Gonzalez’s struggles, he provides excellent support for a rotation that desperately needed it.

For the Nationals, while the return isn’t known at this time, they were able to receive something in return rather than losing Gonzalez for nothing this offseason.
