Report: Phillies acquire Rays’ All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos

The Philadelphia Phillies made their second big move at the trade deadline, further solidifying their lineup with the addition of Tampa Bay Rays catcher Wilson Ramos.

While Ramos is on the disabled list due to a hamstring strain, he should be cleared for return early in August. Upon his return, he will prove to be an excellent addition to Philadelphia’s lineup.

In 78 games this season, the 30-year-old slashed .297/.346/.488 with an outstanding .834 OPS, 14 home runs and 53 RBI. In comparison, Philadelphia’s current catchers have collectively posted a .699 OPS on the season.

While Ramos is a free agent and would be a rental for Philadelphia, that actually would benefit the Phillies given they have 25-year-old Jorge Alfaro who could serve as Ramos’ backup and then take over next season.

The return heading to Tampa Bay is not known at this time. According to Joel Sherman  of MLB Network, it is not expected to be a big return.
