Christian Hackenberg waived by the Raiders

Well that didn’t take very long. The Oakland Raiders have released quarterback Christian Hackenberg, less than a month after making a trade with the New York Jets to acquire him, per the NFL’s transaction wire.

The Raiders won’t have to give up anything in the end, however, as Hackenberg was traded for a conditional 2019 seventh-round pick.

This really does not bode well for the young man’s future. Jon Gruden was one of the men who was high on Hackenberg coming out of Penn State, and he famously said he’d be shocked if he wasn’t a first-round pick.

In the end, the Jets were roundly criticized for trading up in the second round to acquire him in 2016.

Hackenberg still has yet to throw a pass during a regular-season game, and he has been truly atrocious during the preseason. At this point, it seems like it’s going to take nothing less than a miracle for his NFL career to become something substantive.
