Phil Mickelson stirred up a bit of controversy by hitting a moving ball on the green during a frustrating U.S. Open, and “Lefty” is now apologizing for the incident.
Dave Shedloski of GolfWorld shared a message from Mickelson, who said he’s embarrassed and disappointed for what happened on the course at Shinnecock Hills.
Just received a note from Phil Mickelson. “I know this should've come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down. My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend. I'm embarrassed and disappointed by my actions. It was clearly not my finest moment and I'm sorry. “

Mickelson’s meltdown occurred on the 13th hole during the third round of the tournament. The course was exceptionally challenging that day, and his frustration boiled over on the green.
Rather than let a missed putt slide down a ridge and into a bunker, Mickelson chased after the ball and hit it while moving. The decision incurred a two-stroke penalty — and the wrath of golf purists. He shot an 81 for the round.
Although the apology was necessary, it’s a forgivable mistake.
Mickelson finished the U.S. Open in a tie for 48th.
