Report: Patriots, Rob Gronkowski working on ‘tweaking’ contract

After an offseason of uncertainty, we know that Rob Gronkowski will play for the New England Patriots in 2018. With that established, the Patriots, coach Bill Belichick, and Gronkowski’s camp are focused on amending the tight end’s contract.

“After Belichick’s recent get-together with Rob Gronkowski and agent Drew Rosenhaus, we’re told the sides are continuing to work on tweaking Gronk’s deal in some fashion to assuage the situation,” Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reported.

Gronkowski has two years left on his current deal. He’s set to make a base salary of $8 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019. In 2017, Gronkowski caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards with eight touchdowns.

Shortly after New England’s loss in Super Bowl LII, Gronkowski made it clear that retirement was an option. Logically, we’d have to think that a new contract situation would go a long way toward solidifying Gronkowski’s status with the team. But given what’s happened, at least some apprehension from both sides would be expected.
