Report: Giants to sign veteran RB Jonathan Stewart

Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart on Monday Night Football

The New York Giants haven’t featured a strong running game in years. Attempting to remedy that, general manager Dave Gettleman has reportedly come to an agreement with former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart.

This is a great fit for a team that has a small window open to contend in the NFC.

Stewart is going to be 31 years old when the season begins, but he’s still capable of toting the rock for tough gains. He’s lost some burst and speed in recent years but should be a great complement to young running back Wayne Gallman, who came on strong last year toward the end of the season. Both will benefit if the Giants manage to lure one of the top offensive linemen in free agency to their side.

In 10 seasons as a member of the Panthers, Stewart piled up 7,318 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns, along with 162 catches for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns through the air.
