Speaking to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Saturday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t necessarily make much hews. Sure he mentioned that the team would like to bring back Dez Bryant. But that’s been the company talking point for some time now.
Instead, Jones’ most-interesting comments surrounded the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles. Not only did he praise the Cowboys’ NFC East rivals, Jones made sure to note that the Eagles’ championship puts more pressure on the Cowboys and raises the bar for his team.
“I think it raised the bar. I think it puts pressure on the Cowboys,” Jones told the media, via the Cowboys’ official website. “They (the Eagles) took it down to the bone and brought it back up to have a world championship. And we’ve been doing the same thing.”
It’s definitely an intriguing comment. Dallas has not necessarily stripped its roster like we saw from the Eagles immediately after the firing of Chip Kelly. Is Jones suggesting that the Cowboys should do this? We’re not too sure.
In addition to Bryant’s contract situation being up in the air, the Cowboys have a $6.5 million decision to make on future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten. They’re also on the brink of placing the franchise tag on defensive end Demarcus Lawrence.
While Dallas doesn’t have the means to go out there and make a huge splash in free agency, it doesn’t mean Jones and the front office won’t be proactive. His comments from Indy on Saturday pretty much hinted in this direction.
